TRI CITY PROPERTY MANAGEMENT COMMUNITY MANAGERS “SEA” HUNGER DISAPPEAR, ONE CAN AT A TIME.

By Melanie Baas

Each year in December, Carpenter, Hazlewood, Delgado and Wood, one of the leading law firms in Phoenix, sponsors a food drive to support a food bank within the valley. This event isn’t just your typical food drive…….Community Managers throughout the valley gather together and create structures out of the goods collected; thus leading to an annual CANstructure event.

In 2010 I was designated as the “team leader” for the event. I cannot even begin to tell you how rewarding this was as the weeks leading up to the event came together. My team began in the fall with contacting vendors, families, friends and board members for donations toward the structure. Many of them donated gift cards to various stores to allow us to purchase the necessary items for our specific structure. We then decided on the structure design and the shopping began. I would like to express thanks to the Tri-City team for the countless hours that they spent on the project, as well as board member, Rose Singbush, for taking the time to assist us with the shopping for the canned goods.

The event was a success with the 17 participating teams working together to collect and donate 13,949 pounds of food that was donated to the United Food Bank.

This year the TropiCANa Girls (the Tri-City team) used green beans to create a sea turtle. We surrounded the turtle with bags of brown rice for the beach sand, bottles of water for the sea, peanut butter for the base of the palm tree and bags of dried rice and vegetable for the palm fronds.

I am proud to say that the TropiCANa Girls took home trophies for the PEOPLES CHOICE and MOST DONATED FOOD. These trophies are proudly displayed in the Tri-City office lobby, next to last year’s award for the BEST USE OF FOOD.

Thank you again to all who helped in any way. Your contribution helped make this event a success. We hope to have the opportunity to participate in the event again next year and every year.
